Tips for Choosing between Paintball Guns
![]() |
Paintball guns, commonly called markers, are crucial to the sport of paintball. Markers are used to fire the paintballs and come in all shapes, sizes and prices. You'll find markers ranging from as little as $100 to as much as $1000 or more. For someone who's just starting out with the sport, choosing the right marker can be confusing. Keep reading to learn more about the various types of markers available these days and their benefits and drawbacks.
Pump style markers are some of the most affordable on the market today. These are different from other types of markers such as semi-automatic or automatic because the paintballs must be manually pumped into the firing chamber. Pump markers are thought to be accurate as well as cost-efficient for beginners and advanced players alike. Depending on the type of pump marker you choose, you may even be able to fire constantly by holding the trigger while pumping. Most of the time, this type of marker is powered by cartridges filled with CO2.
The next, and most popular type of paintball marker is the semi-automatic. Unlike pump markers, the semi-automatic variety does not need to be pumped before firing. Just pull the trigger and shoot! There are a wide variety of semi-automatics available, ranging greatly in price depending on what model you choose. Some feature super sensitive triggers that fire with the gentlest touch. Most of the time a tank of CO2 or compressed air is used to power a semi-automatic marker.
A step up from the semi-automatic is the electronic paintball marker, the most advanced variety out there today. These markers come with different modes and options, all powered by computer chip. For example, some modes allow you to shoot multiple paintballs with one squeeze of the trigger. Although these markers are more advanced than the other types, they can be found for reasonable prices.
When shopping for paintball guns, there are lots of options available. You'll find some markers with plastic bodies, and others that are made from metal. Beginners to the sport may want to choose an all-in-one kit, which contains everything you'll need to get started playing paintball. Most kits contain the marker, safety equipment, hopper and air tank. Some kits come with enough paintballs to get you started, while others require you to buy them separately.
