The Allure of Paintball
![]() |
Paintball is a popular activity for older children, teenagers and adults. This sport puts players into teams with the main objective of each being to eliminate players from the opposing team by hitting them with a paint filled ball. The paintballs are fired from a gun called a marker that is powered by air, nitrogen or carbon dioxide. There are all different kinds of markers ranging in price from around $100 to more than $1,000. Lately, the popularity of this sport has reached record highs. Because of this, there are not only casual hobbyists who play but also serious tournament players seeking rewards like cash, prizes and notoriety. There are web sites and even magazines devoted to this exciting pursuit.
While the sport is great for kids and adults alike, there are safety precautions that should be taken no matter what age you are. The proper equipment is crucial for safety and game play. You will need to first dress in comfortable clothing that allows for a wide range of movement and wear a good pair of athletic shoes. Then, you'll want to add elbow and knee pads, a chest and throat protector, and a face mask or pair of safety goggles. Paintball is a very safe sport, but the right protective wear is required to keep it that way. After you've taken care of the safety issues, it's time to choose your sporting equipment.
To play the game, you will need paintballs, of course. Paintballs are basically gelatin capsules filled with a special type of paint. They resemble marbles in shape and size and splatter upon impact. You will also need a marker for firing them. Beginners can start off with an inexpensive, basic marker, while more serious players will want something more advanced. To load the paintballs into the marker, you'll need a piece of equipment known as a hopper. To fire the marker, you'll need a tank filled with compressed air. Depending on where you shop, you may be able to find starter kits that contain everything you need to begin playing.
Paintball is such a popular sport lately that it's likely you've got a facility in your area. If you don't have your own equipment, many fields and facilities offer rental equipment. Once you experience the exhilaration of eliminating and evading the competition, you'll want to play all the time!
